Other Festivals

1. Month Chitrai:

In Chitrai Powrnami, all temples of Muruga will have a day of festivity. There will be a silver Car ( Velli Ratham) festival in Periyanayaki Amman Temple for Muthukumaesan and his Devis.

2. Agni Nakshatram:

Agni Nakshatra are generally 14 days in Chitrai end and the beginning of Vaikasi ( Tamil Month) To go round the hills on these days is very holy. It will be a grand sight to see thousands joining in this group.Some hundreds will carry Couvery water on their head from Kodumudi with music and devotional songs accompanying them. They will bathe Palani Andavar with this water and woship him. Becoause Sivacharyas first came from Kodumudi, they have adopted this system.

On the last day, Muthukumarasamy in Periyanayaki Amman Temple will distribute holy water in Ookkatti mandapam at the foot of the hills. Then he will go round the hils and return to his temole.

3. Vaikasi:

The star Visaka belongs to Muruga. There will be a festivals for 10 days in Periyanayaki Amman Temple.There will be a street peocession on various mounts as iviry palanquin; golden peacock, Kaarpaga tree, ram. On Visaka day three will be car . Next day there will be ivory palanquin followed by chapparam ( a sort of car) on the next day.

4. Ani:

On Ani Uttaram, ther will be Ani Thirumanjanam for Nataraja. He will go round the streets. Annabishekam will take place in the temples of hil and base.

5. Adi:

On Adi Pathinettam Perukku ( 18th day) Peruyanayaki will go round is silver car at night. In the morning the Devi and Kailasanada will go to Peria Avudayar Temple to Perform Kannimar (virgin) pooja.

On the Amavasai day people from Kerala and Tamil Nadu will come to bathe in Shanmuga Nathi.

On Adi gighteenth there will be a Laksharchana (1 lakh stotras) to Periyanayaki. On the finishing day the Devi will be adorned with golden sheath. On that night there will be a silver car peocession.

6. Purattasi:

Navaratri will be celebrated in Bhogar Temple. Pandarams will be honoured. It is in Ramappian copper plates.

7. Ippasi:

The day when Muruga appeared (Birth day) will be celebrated. It is customary to fast for 6 days during Skanda Sashti. It will be a wonder to behold evenpeacocks fast on that day. Only for this festival the chinnakumarar of the hills will come down and kill Taraka in north Giri Street, Banugopan in east Giri street, Singamugan is South Giri street, and Surapadman in west Giri street. Veerabahu and other decars will follow him from the hills, mounted on a silver ram. After victory, due honours will be done to the temple authorities.

Next day marriage festivals will take place in the hill temple and base.

8. Karthigai:

Karthigai is a festival month for Karthikeyan. Aten days festival will be conducted. Everyday Chinnakumarar will come in a Manjam (car like structure). On Karthigai day he will come in Golden car in the outer and inner circuits. that day will be full moon day.

9. Margazhi:

This month evertday from 3.00 a.m. devotional songs will be broadcast. During the "Pavai Mahanadu" will be conducted. In Laxmi Narayana Perumal Temple Ra Pattu and Pagal Pattu will be celebarated. That will be inclusive of Vaikunda Ekadesi.

This month in Arulmigu Sri Dhandayuthapani Hill Temple Thirupalliyezhucchi Pooja will be conducted.

10. Thai:

Star Poosam will be on a Full Moon day. There will be a ten day festival in Periyanayaki Amman Temple. Everyday there will be a procession with diffrent mounts. On the 7th day ( Thai Poosam) car festivals will take place. The deity will be taken to the Shanmuga Nadhi for ablutions. The tenth day is a float festival. Though bearing Kavadi to Muruga on any day is sacred, the one on Chitra Powrnami, Panguni Uthiram, and Vaikasi Visakam are the holiest. That at Thai Poosam is holiest of all.

11. Masi:

In the Mariayamman Temple in the centre of the city there will be a ten day festival. Devotees will wield pots with fire called " Agni Karagm", or "Theecchatti".

12. Panguni:

There will be a ten day festival in Thiru Avinankudi. Muthukumarasamy flanked by his two Devis will go in procession morning and evening. On some days he will go round the hill also. The mounts will be ivory palanquin, Kamadenu, Ram, Gold Peacock, Silver elephanr, Gold Horse, etc.

On the 5th day in the evening he will go in Golden car. On the 6th day Muthukumarasamy with his consorts will go round the hill in silver car. The seventh day is Uthira Car (Panguni Theer) festival. In the early morning he will start for the river, where the wooden sandals, kavadi, Idumban's stick, etc will be bathed. On the 8th day there will be a grand fire-works in Vyapuri tank bund. this time deemed to be holy for tonsure.

On the 10th day Iswara goes to Periyanayaki Amman temple.
